Welcome to Baby Penguins! This is a documentation project for Linux on my laptops. Although I talk about a variety of installations, the main distribution I'm working with is Fedora.

Does the distribution provide a solid, functioning platform for a laptop without being too stupid?

That is the key question that I have. Linux, for me, is not simply something to tinker with (though I am a tinkerer) - I want it to be my main system. I dislike Windows and Mac for many reasons : both for usability and moral reasons. But Linux has had problems making the transition to the mobile world. In my evaluation, I will look at the amount of truly stupid things in the distro. Some distros will be too stupid and won't even reach the configuration stage. Some will be fully configured before I realize how stupid they are. Some, no doubt, I will become ingrained in using even though they are stupid. I do not guarantee staying up to date or being fair and balanced.

The Five Most Important Points

The most important things for me at the moment are the following list of core components. If you found my Focus way too vague, this is probably what you're looking for. Every Laptop-Linux distribution should be able to do the following with minimal effort, at the very least:

  • Sound and Music : Does the distribution detect the sound card and play typical music files?
  • Display and Video : Does the distribution detect and manage the screen and video card sensibly and can one play typical videos?
  • Power Management : Can you suspend, hibernate, and power down automatically. Can you RESUME from all of these things, and is the management sensible and reliable. Can it actually throttle power use?
  • Wireless Internet: Can you easily and sensibly get wifi working and manage it correctly?
  • Other-OS Integration : Face it, your friends use Macs or Windows. Can you easily integrate your computer-life with theirs?
