Mint

Homepage

You can find Mint Linux at http://linuxmint.com

Overview

I use Linux Mint (Gloria), a derivative of Ubuntu (9.04) - almost exclusively. I like Mint for exactly that reason - because it is not too difficult to use it exclusively. It takes Ubuntu, which is a great distribution, and adds just a thin enough layer to make it really, really usable immediately.

Boons

  • Proprietary hardware is included, and detected, automatically. This includes the wily Broadcom b43 drivers.
  • Additional repositories of the free but not-opensource software that you want (like MP3 drivers) are included in the installation
  • The Environment is modified to be cleaner and nicer than the default Gnome/Ubuntu environment
  • There is very little extra cruft - they still use the standard Ubuntu software repositories and program locations - so that you can use Ubuntu help and resources in your everyday life.

Annoyances

Mintified Firefox

There are very few things about Mint that really annoy me. The number one thing is that the default distribution commandeers the Google search bar in Firefox to use a re-branded Linux Mint Google Search. To overcome that, you can do this:

Getting rid of Mint-Firefox

  • comment out the packages.linuxmint.com source from /etc/apt/sources.lst
  • sudo apt-get remove firefox*
  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get install firefox

Getting Rid of the Mint-Firefox Search

  • Install the Add to Search Bar Extension
  • Restart Firefox
  • Click on the Search Bar options and choose Manage Search Engine List
  • Delete the current **Google* Search
  • Go to http://google.com , but the cursor in the search entry, and right click. Choose Add to Search Bar...
  • Configure and you're done!

Other Annoyances

  • the terminal bell is on at installation and needs to be uninstalled.
  • some key-for-me software is not available at installation: emacs and subversion.
  • There is no package configuration during installation.
