Environment

This is the subwiki for how to set up your environment.

Terminal bell

Terminal bell is annoying. To remove it:

  1. you need to turn it off in the profile settings of the terminal. In terminal, go to Edit -> Profile Preferences
  2. you also need to turn off the 'alert sound' in your system prefs. Go to System -> Preferences -> Hardware -> Sound -> Sounds and uncheck 'alert sound'

Bash Profile

Having a good .bash_profile file is key to a good user experience. There are lots of configuration and alias options. You can use or customize mine if you'd like. If you don't really know what you're doing, you might also want to do this:

1. edit .bashrc and make it say:

 . .bash_profile

2. customize your .bash_profile. My bash_profile? is right there.

Emacs

If you use emacs, you probably also want a good .emacs file. Mine is linked here : emacs?
