Yum-able Firefox Plugins

Java Plugin

The current release is java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin.

You can test that it's installed correctly at the following. For Java especially, you might want to verify all of them:

Mozplugger (PDF)

Provides in-browser PDF (non-adobe, I think).

Test :

  • (not found yet)

VLC (Movie Watching)

There is a plugin for vlc (mozilla-vlc). There's also one for mplayer and possibly xine, but I haven't installed them.

Test :

  • vlc test : (not found yet)
sudo yum -y install java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin mozplugger alsa-plugins-pulseaudio libcurl mozilla-vlc

Adobe Flash

There is an opensource plugin that never worked well for me. Maybe later.

For Adobe-Flash, you'll need to install alsa-plugins-pulseaduio and libcurl for it to work. Adobe does a piss poor job supporting x64 architectures and it took them until 12/2008 to release an alpha-level 64-bit plugin for flash. So we're going to subdivide again:

When you're done, test:

i386 (32 bit) Fedora

I think all you'll need to do is install alsa-plugins-pulseaduio, libcurl, and flash-plugin

The plugin may only be available if the Adobe Repo is added, which you may not want to do. In that case, the download page is at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/.

x64 (64 bit) Fedora

Using the experimental plugin

Adobe now has an alpha-experimental plugin through adobe labs. Go to http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html to download the most recent version. untar it and move the libflashplayer.so file to ~/.mozilla/plugins

Using the old, somewhat buggy, method

In the olden days, we had to install nspluginwrapper. It didn't work that great, but it worked. If you still want to give that a try, here's the procedure.

sudo rpm -ivh http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/adobe-release/adobe-release-i386-1.0-1.noarch.rpm
sudo rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-adobe-linux
sudo mkdir -p /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
sudo yum -y install nspluginwrapper.{i386,x86_64}
sudo yum -y install pulseaudio-libs.i386 libflashsupport.i386
sudo yum -y install flash-plugin
sudo yum -y erase rhythmbox.*
sudo mozilla-plugin-config nspluginwrapper -i /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
sudo mozilla-plugin-config -i -g -v
